Gohan pulling out the Z Sword in Buu's Fury When Trunks was battling against Future Dabura, Trunks used the sword as his weapon but was later spit on by Dabura, turning it into stone and it broke after Trunks let go of it, accidentally killing Future Old Kai, who later grumbles about being killed while still stuck in the sword. However, due to Kibito sensing Babidi's movements on Earth, they never got to test its power against the block of Katchin and Future Old Kai was never released. Trunks trained with the Z Sword and his power rose to new heights. In the future, Future Trunks trained with Shin and Kibito in preparation for Babidi's arrival.

Despite Shin and Kibito expressing shock and great disappointment over this, not all hope was lost, as the breaking of the blade finally released Old Kai from its clutches, leaving him free to unleash Gohan's dormant power. Unfortunately, the Z Sword breaks when attempting to slice through the cube. In order to test the sword's limits, Shin materializes a giant cube made of Katchin, the densest material in the universe, to give Goku to throw at Gohan. Later on when Goku visits the Sacred World of the Kais after returning to Other World, he tests Gohan by hurling a large boulder towards him, which the Z Sword cuts through easily. Though finding it difficult to hold the sword due to its weight, Gohan begins training to wield it. Despite great difficulty and Kibito constantly decrying him for being a mere mortal, Gohan is successful in freeing the sword upon transforming into a Super Saiyan, stunning Kibito in the process. In Age 774, with Gohan needing medical attention, Shin brings him to the Sacred World of the Kais to heal as well as to try and release the Z Sword so as to gain access to its legendary strength. It became legend that whoever could release the Z Sword would gain access to an amazing power. As hard as they tried, none of the Kais that attempted to release the Z Sword were successful. During one of these meetings, held roughly 75 Million Before Age, they got into an argument over some trifling thing and a certain short-tempered God of Destruction, Beerus, sealed Old Kai away inside the Z Sword as it would not have been proper for him to destroy the Sacred World of the Kais itself. Once every 1,000 years, the Supreme Kais and the Gods of Destruction go to each other's realms and hold a coordination meeting. It seemed little more than a means of sealing Old Kai/Future Old Kai. The sword itself is not particularly sturdy, as it was Goku and Gohan who broke the sword just playing around with it, and it also broke in the fight against Future Dabura. Judging by its thin cross-section and wide blade, it appears to be optimized for cutting as opposed to thrusting. For these hardcore fans, the game follows three story arcs of the series: the Saiyan/Namek Arc, the Androids Arc, and the Majin Buu Arc.The Z Sword resembles a hand-and-a-half sword.

This keeps hardcore DBZ lovers engaged as the game does not veer away from the series much at all, especially if the player chooses to follow the direct line of the story in the series.
Throughout the game, players will encounter many known characters (48 versions unlockable) like Super Saiyan 1-3 Goku, Vegeta, Frieza, and even fusion characters Vegito and Gotenks. No matters seem to be extremely pressing, however, as players can take their time to explore and talk to NPCs that roam the map. The mechanics of the game almost seem identical to Pokémon, as players are given a somewhat open world that they can travel in, but still have a mission to achieve and a vague outline of what they are supposed to do. The battle screens also somewhat mimic an early version of Street Fighter, and the controls are somewhat similar to it as well, but outside of that it is more like that of Pokémon or Legends of Zelda as mentioned before. The battle scenes between the characters are extremely like that of Pokémon, with the same font of script over the screen and same styled health bars displayed above the character.
